The Successes Surrounding Shipping Containers
Less than 70 years ago, the shipping of goods by sea was carried out in boxes, barrels and bags of all kinds and shapes. Every exporter had its own packaging solution and each one varied from the other. Towards the start of the 1950s, the introduction of the shipping container revolutionised the international trade. Soon enough, the size of the containers were standardised and over the next 3-4 decades, almost the whole of sea trade was being undertaken in the standard steel containers. It was so successful an idea that it makes one wonder why it became common so late.

It made the port times of ships many times smaller. IT even changed the way transport ships look. Most of the goods of perishable nature like vegetables and fruits were not regularly exported because of high rates of air transport. For example, in the temperature controlled containers, bananas can stay fresh for as long as 50 days. Similarly, the specialised, fuel efficient designs of the container ships and saved labour costs for loading and unloading of merchandise were translated into lower shipping costs for the importers. Decreasing shipping times
The old style of shipping goods required for each exporter to load his merchandise, which inevitable varied in size and shape. There used to be experts of loading stuff to utilise maximum shipping space. Since most of this loading and unloading was done manually, the ships would have to dock for 10-12 days at each port depending upon the goods that needed to be loaded/unloaded and the size of the ship.
The shipping container turned this process on its heels; the new container carriers are designed to accommodate containers which come to port already packaged and ready to be uploaded. Special cranes are used to put these containers onto the ships in straight rows, without having to decide each time what to put where. The docks became much more efficient. The shipping times of products by sea were cut into half, if one were to make even the most conservative estimate. Security and safety of the merchandise onboard
The steel reinforced exterior of the shipping container is especially useful in protecting the expensive goods being transported over turbulent seas over thousands of kilometres. The big boxes are connected to each other and to the hull of the ship for safer carriage. The boxes are locked so that they don’t open up on their own in the roughest weather. They cannot be opened by anyone on their way, except for those who have legal right or obligation so to do. These containers are offloaded at the ports and put onto trains or trucks as they are and transported to their eventual destinations without a need for a messy repackaging on the port. The safety and security provided by the containers has resulted in an ever increasing customer interest in their acquisition.
The cargo container revolutionised the sea trade as the first steam engine revolutionised the land markets. It was a simple idea which changed the way people perceive import/ export and how shipping companies design and operate their cruises. After its introduction in the start of the second half of 20th century, it was an instant success and the new industry protocol. It is almost impossible in the current times to imagine a global trade as well as the domestic one which is based not on the cargo containers.
